Maya’s most famous, oft quoted – “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will not forget how you made them feel.” really impacted me as a manager and leader of people. I worried that “all business” was not the best path and that getting to know your people and caring for them was more critical. Maya understood all the stuff that comes up for us when we feel less, unworthy and she told us over and over we mattered. She inspired, encouraged, pushed, hushed, led, walked the talk and even her last tweeted words on May 23 “Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God.” were prophetic. Maya is doing more than hearing the voice of God now. Take a few moments today or tomorrow to read some of her inspiring text and know that she only wished the highest good for all of us. Her smile on April 5, her last public appearance as her portrait was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington lit up the room and now will light up heaven even brighter.
